This week’s Teacher of the Week is Chris Kilby, who teaches 7th grade English. Mr. Kilby received both his Master’s Degree in Education and his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Maryland. Mr. Kilby is in his sixth year at VFMS. Before coming here, he taught for two years in the Montgomery County, Maryland, public school system. Chris is married to Karen Kilby, who also teaches at VFMS.
In an interview with the PTO, Mr. Kilby shared the following information:
Pets – He recently lost his dear black lab mix, Molly. She was seventeen years old.
Hobbies now – Mountain biking, traveling, and playing the guitar and drums.
Hobbies, sports and interests when you were in middle school – Football and baseball.
Interesting/little known facts or talents – Went on a 1,500 mile mountain bike trip from Calgary, Canada to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Advice for parents of middle school children – Don’t be afraid to allow them to struggle. Students need to overcome obstacles to learn from their mistakes and develop the grit that will help carry them through tougher challenges to come.
