This week’s Teacher of the Week is 5th-8th grade math specialist, Allison Long. Mrs. Long received her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, as well as an Elementary Education Certification and a Principal Certification, from Immaculata University. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, Mathematics, from Penn State. Mrs. Long has been a teacher at VFMS for sixteen years. Prior to that, she taught seventh grade at Mulcahey Middle School in Taunton, Massachusetts. She and her husband, Kevin, who is a teacher at Unionville High School, have two sons: Nathan who is sixteen, and Jeremy, who is nine.
In an interview with the PTO, Mrs. Long shared the following information:
Pets – None.
Hobbies now – Plays volleyball in adult leagues throughout the area, watches college football and spends time with her family.
Hobbies, sports and interests when you were in middle school – Band.
Interesting/little known facts or talents – In college, Mrs. Long was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and as a result, marched in the Citrus, Fiesta and Rose Bowl parades. More recently, she and her husband appeared on the TV show, “America’s Funniest Videos.”
Advice for parents of middle school children – Middle school is a tough time for students socially, emotionally, and academically. Continue to support your children even when they act like they don’t need you! They are listening to what you say even when they act like they don’t—keep nurturing them and encouraging them!
